What is business data? Sources, types and how teams use it

Business data is the structured record of who a company is: its legal identity, where it operates, who runs it, what it files and what it owns. Everything a go-to-market team does — targeting, routing, forecasting, compliance — sits on top of that record.

    The four layers

Layer one is registry data: the legal entity, registration number, incorporation date, status, registered address and directors, published by an official register. Layer two is filing data: accounts, sector codes, employee bands and, in some markets, financials.

Layer three is asset and location data: property records, premises, licences and permits. Layer four is signal data: openings, relocations, appointments and local news that tell you something changed this week.

What each layer is good for

Registry data is your identity spine — it makes deduplication, routing and account hierarchies possible. Filing data drives segmentation and scoring. Asset data tells you physical footprint, which matters enormously for field sales, proptech and local services.

Signal data drives timing. A perfectly targeted message sent in a random week converts far worse than an average message sent the week a company moved, hired or opened.
