Building talent pools with firmographics: sector, size and growth as sourcing filters

Most sourcing starts with the candidate: search a profile database, filter by job title, hope the data is current. There is a smarter route for niche roles. Start from the employer. If you know which companies employ the profiles you need, you know where your talent pool lives — and firmographic company data tells you exactly that.

Employers are more findable than candidates

Candidate data decays fast: people change jobs, titles inflate, profiles go stale. Company data is anchored in official registers — sector codes, size bands, locations and structures are filed facts with a publication date. Filtering employers is therefore more reliable than filtering profiles.

The method: define the profile you need, translate it into the types of companies that employ such people, and filter the company universe on those characteristics. Looking for control engineers? That is industrial automation firms between 20 and 500 employees within your region — a query, not a hunch.

The filters that do the work

Four firmographic dimensions carry most of the weight. Sector codes tell you what the company does. Size bands tell you whether the team is big enough to contain your profile. Location and site structure tell you whether the commute is realistic. Growth direction tells you whether people there are settling in or starting to look around.

Combine them and niches become countable. 'All medical-device companies with 50–250 employees and a production site in the Midlands' might return forty companies — forty places where your next placement probably already works.

    Keeping the pool alive

A talent pool mapped by employer stays current almost by itself: monitor the companies and the pool updates when they do. New entrants to the niche appear automatically, companies that leave the filters drop out, and you always know which employers to watch.

Drimble's company data covers official registers in the UK, France, Spain, Ireland, Denmark, Belgium, Canada, Australia, Greenland and India, with sector, size and structure fields suited to exactly this kind of filtering. We do not provide company data for the Netherlands.

    Frequently asked questions

Does employer-first sourcing work for very niche roles?

Especially for niche roles. The rarer the profile, the fewer companies employ it — so the employer universe is small, countable and fully mappable, which is exactly where register-based filtering shines.

How do sector codes work across countries?

Most registers use national variants of standard classifications (such as SIC or NACE families). A good data platform normalises these so one sector filter works across markets without manual translation.
